I have searched the HP site thoroughly. Are you plugging in the USB cable to the printer in step 9 after getting the “update could not be completed” message without “finding the appropriate driver” in the list?

If so, that is the problem. I run Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit. In reply to FoxFifth’s post on September 2, HP Download and Install Assistant makes it easy to download and install your software.
IllustraVisions Replied on September 4, I found what were supposed to be replacement drivers for USB connectivity under Windows 7, but when I attempt to install the windosw drivers, Windows calmly informs me that the current dirvers are the best possible option!
Here is something else you might try. So access to what you needed to know changed from knowing it yourself to knowing who to ask.

I have made multiple attempts to completely uninstall all of the aspects of the printer and now I am faced with a seemingly impossible situation. Did this solve your problem?
This product cannot be identified by Serial Number alone. Yet Windows says that it either doesn’t need to do it or can’t do it, depending on what part of the OS you decide to believe. This could take up to 3 minutes, depending on your computer and connection speed.
